Home and daily help

Home changes, a way to find a local housing provider, hiring your own workers, and independent living centers.

These are starting points in Texas. Confirm the details with the organization. We do not decide who qualifies.

State program

Amy Young Barrier Removal

Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs

The Amy Young Barrier Removal Program can give a one-time grant of up to $22,500. It is for a qualified household that includes a person with a disability who needs changes that make the home more accessible and remove hazards. Household income cannot be over 80 percent of Area Median Family Income. Tenants and homeowners can be eligible. The program is not available in every part of Texas. A household uses Help for Texans to find a local provider. The department's Help for Texans page says it does not take applications from individuals.

Next step

On Help for Texans, choose Home Repair/Accessibility Modifications, then show only home modification for accessibility, and search your city or county.

Help for Texans

Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs

Help for Texans points households to local providers. The department says its funds go to those providers, not to individuals directly. It does not take applications from individuals on this page. A provider may be full and may not help everyone who calls. If no provider is listed, check the city or county. Questions about a program or a monitored property can go to info@tdhca.texas.gov. For manufactured housing, the page lists 800-500-7074.

Next step

Open Help for Texans, pick the kind of help, and search your city or county. For manufactured housing, call 800-500-7074.

State option

Consumer Directed Services

Texas Health and Human Services

Consumer Directed Services lets you hire and manage workers if you are already in a program that offers it. It is not a way to skip an interest list. Ask your case manager or service coordinator. They give you a list of financial management agencies. You pick one for payroll. If you are under 18, a parent is the employer. If you are 18 or older and have a guardian, the guardian is the employer. If you are 18 or older and do not have a guardian, you are the employer, or you may name a designated representative. The page lists people who cannot be hired. Read that full list before you hire.

Next step

Ask your case manager or service coordinator for the agency list.

Independent living services

Texas Health and Human Services

Core independent living services are free at a center for independent living. They include information and referral, skills training such as cooking a meal, peer counseling, and advocacy. They also include help moving from a nursing home to the community, or from high school to work or more school. Purchased items, such as some home changes or devices, use a sliding scale. Assessments are free. The page says anyone with a significant disability can receive services. HHSC says it contracts with 15 centers for core services. Search for a center on the page.

Next step

Use the center search on the independent living page, then call that center.
