Equipment

Equipment here means tools that help you communicate, read, hear, see, or manage daily life. This page points to public programs. It is not a catalog, and it does not tell you what to buy.

If a wheelchair request was denied, start with the equipment guide. In California, phones, the relay service, and speech devices also have a state program. See phones and communication.

Next step

Medicare wheelchairs and scooters

Medicare

Medicare says Part B covers wheelchairs and scooters when you are eligible. Power wheelchairs and scooters need a face-to-face exam and a written prescription. Some power wheelchairs need prior authorization, which the supplier usually sends. Medicare says a request may be denied if it finds you do not medically require the chair, or if it does not get enough information. After the Part B deductible, you pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount if the supplier accepts assignment.

Next step

Read the Medicare page, and ask the supplier if they are enrolled and will accept assignment before you get the chair.

Appeal a Medicare coverage decision

Medicare

Medicare says you can appeal if it or your plan refuses to cover or pay for an item, stops paying, or changes what you owe. The steps depend on whether you have Original Medicare, a Medicare Advantage plan, or a drug plan. You get a decision letter at each level with instructions for the next one. For free counseling, Medicare points to the State Health Insurance Assistance Program at shiphelp.org.

Next step

Read the letter from Medicare or your plan, then follow the appeal path on this page for your type of coverage.
